Fr. Pedro Arrupe Fund

A Response to the Hurricane Restoration
Needs of the New Orleans Province

Immaculate Conception Church in downtown New Orleans had 8-10 feet of oil and water in the basement of the church that needed to be pumped out and electrical service repaired and restored. The parish rectory, including a deep elevator shaft under repair at the time of hurricane Katrina, was also flooded. The oil coatings left in the basement and rectory must be removed using highly specialized techniques. Funding is needed to pay for this cleaning and for the electrical repairs and restorations to these beautiful historic structures that are such a vital part of the history and culture of New Orleans.

Fr Fred Kammer awards Arrupe Fund grant to
Fr Tony McGinn for Jesuit High School
Jesuit High School, New Orleans sustained major water damage to the entire school. The school also had roof damage on both the main building and the Roussel Building. The bookstore, 11 classrooms, the commons, cafeteria, auditorium and hallways/lockers will need extensive rehabilitation. The first floors of both buildings will need major work in order to restore them to a state suitable for learning and daily usage. The roofs will need repair or possible replacement in certain affected sections. Beyond the physical needs, there are great financial needs to help offset losses, help staff, and provide for the needy students whose families lost homes or jobs or both. You may give directly to Jesuit High by going to their website www.jesuitnola.org or you may give through the Province (please designate "Jesuit High" when you make your gift).

Fr Kammer, Provincial, awards Arrupe Fund
grant to Fr Kevin Wildes, President of Loyola
Loyola University, New Orleans has to support and retain their talented faculty and staff, who continue to work from satellite campuses, motels, and spare bedrooms. Preliminary estimates suggest that as many as 60 percent of them experienced significant damage to or total loss of their homes. The university is also making repairs to the roof of Holy Name Church, damaged by Katrina. The commitment to keep their faculty and staff, repair the Church, and recover from the projected interim loss of students will cost more than $30 million but is essential to the University’s revival. The Loyola Relief Fund will help the university focus on relief and recovery efforts to push both Loyola and New Orleans forward — leading to a more just and charitable future. You may give directly to Loyola University by going to their website www.loyno.edu or you may give through the Province (please designate "Loyola" when you make your gift).

New Orleans Province & Development Offices in the Mid-City neighborhood of New Orleans sustained serious water damage to the facilities. The first floor of the building is a total loss. Water reached over the doorways and stopped about two inches from the ceiling at the worst point in the flooding. The water remained in the building for approximately three weeks. Black mold literally reaches from the ceilings to the floors. The entire first floor will need to be replaced. Funding is needed to pay for the gutting of the physical space and the restoration of the building. Desks, computers, file cabinets, chairs, fax, copier, mail machines, kitchen, etc. need to be replaced.
