More Ways to Help through the Claver Fund |
Loyola Law School's Gillis Long Poverty Law Center has relocated to Houston and is providing legal assistance to evacuees living there. Many of their clients will need assistance paying for new legal documents, court fees, and transportation. Donations will be used to set up a fund that law students can access to better assist their clients.
The Thensted Center, a social service ministry of St. Charles Parish in Grand Coteau, Louisiana, is sheltering 25 evacuees from New Orleans, including nine young children. To do so requires that they use much more electricity and water than usual (imagine all of those showers and loads of laundry!). The Center needs funds to pay increased utility bills and to purchase start-up housekeeping kits (towels, sheets, cleaning supplies, dishes and utensils, etc.) valued at around $300 each for the area low-income families who are also housing evacuees and trying to help them get relocated.
New Endeavors of the province to respond to, and advocate for, the needs of evacuees and the poor in the New Orleans area will be necessary in the coming months and years as the city struggles to rebuild its infrastructure, welcome back its families, and determine the common good for all concerned.
Remember that any cash contribution to relief efforts is tax-deductible.
