Aide for the People of
Myanmar and China

Many of you are already praying for the needs of the people in Myanmar (Burma) where more than 100,000 are believed to have died as a result of the cyclone that struck on May 10th as well as the needs of the people of China as they recover from an earthquake measuring 7.9 on the Richter scale. As the death toll for both of these disasters continues to climb, we are reminded of the fragility of life. We are also reminded of all of the prayers and support our own province received from so many people around the world after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita and how this lifted us up and made us stronger.

Below are three resources which might aid your prayer for those who are suffering so much in Myanmar and China. One is a specific prayer for the people of Myanmar. The other two are participant's and leader's guides for a prayer service to be used in times of natural disaster. The prayer service focuses on praying in solidarity with our brothers and sisters in need and the humanitarian and relief efforts underway and includes song suggestions, scripture readings, prayers and more. These were developed by the Education for Justice website of the Center of Concern.

We also want to remind you that the Jesuits of the New Orleans Province are accepting donations to benefit the recovery efforts in China and Myanmar. Please indicate that the donation is for relief efforts. You may donate online or mail your check to:
